From the Production Floor to Leadership: How Anastasija Ponomarjova and Michelle Martin are Shaping the Future at MGS Manufacturing.
In Episode 4 of our High-Flyers in STEM podcast series, #GreatnessHasNoGender, host Deirdre Finnerty sits down with two inspiring leaders from MGS Manufacturing, Anastasija Ponomarjova, Production Unit Manager, and Michelle Martin, Senior Quality Engineer. Their stories highlight the power of seizing opportunities, taking ownership, and the steps MGS Manufacturing is taking to create a workplace where women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math's) don’t just contribute—they lead, setting a strong foundation for the future leaders in STEM.
Leadership Through Action: Anastasija’s Journey
Anastasija Ponomarjova’s journey at MGS Manufacturing didn’t start in leadership—it started on the production floor. Through hard work, persistence, and an ability to step up when it mattered, she moved from screening into a managerial role, proving that leadership isn’t about waiting—it’s about showing up.
"I think a lot of it is about taking responsibility and not waiting for someone to tell you what to do. If you see something that needs to be done, just do it," she shares.
Now managing entire production units, Anastasija focuses on creating an environment where her team thrives. "Leadership, for me, is about making sure my team feels supported. If they’re succeeding, I know I’m doing my job right."
Her story is a testament to the fact that career progression in STEM doesn’t always follow a linear path—it’s about recognising opportunities and making the most of them.
From the Lab to Quality Engineering: Michelle’s Path
For Michelle Martin, the shift from a lab-based role to Senior Quality Engineer was both a challenge and an opportunity. She embraced the transition, finding excitement in the problem-solving aspects of quality engineering.
"I was always drawn to science, but when I moved into quality, I realised how much I enjoyed the challenge of troubleshooting and making processes better. It’s about having that mindset of constant improvement."
Her leadership approach is rooted in clarity and communication. "I’ve learned that people do their best work when they know exactly what’s expected of them and why their role matters. Clarity drives engagement."
Like Anastasija, Michelle credits MGS Manufacturing for fostering an environment where career growth is driven by capability rather than assumption. "I was given opportunities because I showed I was ready—not because of a box someone needed to tick. That’s what real inclusion looks like."
Building a Future Where Women Feel Confident To Lead
MGS Manufacturing isn’t just talking about diversity—they’re making it a reality through structured initiatives that create pathways for women in STEM.
From mentorship programmes to career development opportunities, the company is actively investing in talent and ensuring that leadership roles aren’t limited by outdated expectations.
"We’re not here just to be part of a diversity statistic. We’re here because we’re good at what we do," says Anastasija.
By having an inclusive culture where skill and ambition drive success, MGS is shaping a future where more women step into leadership roles—without having to justify their place there.
Lessons in Leadership: Advice from Anastasija and Michelle
Reflecting on their careers, both leaders share valuable advice for women looking to step up in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math’s):
-
Take initiative – "Don’t wait to be told what to do. If you see an opportunity, take it," says Anastasija.
-
Stay adaptable – "Be open to challenges and willing to step outside your comfort zone—that’s where the real growth happens," Michelle advises.
-
Find your voice – "If something needs to be said, say it. Leadership is about taking responsibility, even when it’s uncomfortable."
The journeys of Anastasija and Michelle prove that leadership isn’t about fitting into a mould—it’s about shaping your own path.
