Listen to Episode 5 #GreatnessHasNoGender: MCC Label - Maria Noonan Shanahan and Deirdre Drennan
From the Production Line to Leading Operations: Maria’s Journey
Maria’s journey in STEM is a powerful testament to the rewards of perseverance and an open mind. Beginning her career as an operator on the production line, Maria never envisioned leading not one but two MCC sites in Ireland today. Reflecting on her early days, she shared, "I started out as an operator, but with every step, I found support and new opportunities to make a difference." Her path wasn’t conventional, but her dedication to learning and contributing shaped her into a leader who now influences MCC’s future direction.
Today, Maria’s role involves overseeing operations at MCC sites in Drogheda and Castlebar. “We have incredibly talented teams,” she notes, “and seeing everyone come together to achieve something bigger than ourselves is a privilege I cherish.” Maria’s story shows how progress is not always linear but is deeply rewarding when fueled by passion and purpose.
“It’s not about the destination,” she says. “It’s about the journey of growth, learning, and giving back.”
Deirdre Drennan: Transforming Quality Standards through Adaptability
Deirdre’s journey into STEM wasn’t conventional. Initially drawn to marketing, her career eventually pivoted towards quality management—a transition that leveraged her diverse background to foster innovative approaches in her current role. “I didn’t start in STEM,” Deirdre explains, “but my skills evolved with me. This role lets me contribute to MCC’s mission in ways I’d never imagined.”
As a Quality Manager, Deirdre leads a team that champions innovation and adherence to high standards, ensuring MCC’s quality goals align with its ED&I values. “Seeing people in my team rise to challenges and surpass their own expectations is incredibly fulfilling,” she says. Deirdre’s story shows that, in STEM, a career path isn’t always linear, but growth and adaptability are crucial to achieving lasting impact.
MCC’s Commitment to ED&I: Building an Inclusive Future
Maria and Deirdre’s journeys unfold within MCC’s inclusive culture, where the value of each individual’s background is celebrated. Recently, the Castlebar and Drogheda sites raised over €2,000 for Ukrainian relief—a fundraiser matched by MCC’s sponsor, Clayton Dubilier & Rice, demonstrating MCC’s commitment to causes close to its employees’ hearts. Additionally, MCC collaborates with Ability West to integrate employees with disabilities, a practice that has enriched the Castlebar team with both skills and spirit.
With 29 nationalities represented across its Irish locations, MCC embraces cultural diversity and encourages employees to bring their authentic selves to work. “Everyone has a voice here,” Deirdre reflects, “and that diversity of experience brings out our collective best.”
Advice for Women in STEM: Wisdom from Maria and Deirdre
For women navigating their own STEM journeys, Maria and Deirdre offer powerful advice. Maria urges perseverance: “Stay determined, even when the path isn’t clear. You never know where your resilience might lead.” Deirdre echoes this, emphasising authenticity and courage: “Show up as yourself, work hard, and let excellence speak for itself.”
Their stories are reminders that, in STEM and beyond, greatness truly has no gender.
