Listen to Episode 5 of #GreatnessHasNoGender: Medtronic - Catherine Clery, R&D Director and Anne Grealish, Snr. Strategic Excellence Program Manager.
Catherine Clery: Focusing on Leading Innovation in R&D
Catherine Clery’s journey into STEM was driven by an innate curiosity and a desire to make an impact. With a background in engineering, she found herself drawn to the problem-solving nature of research and development. Now, as R&D Director at Medtronic, she plays a key role in leading teams that drive medical innovation.
Reflecting on her career path, Catherine acknowledges that stepping into leadership came with challenges, from navigating male-dominated spaces to overcoming self-doubt. However, she credits the supportive culture at Medtronic for enabling her growth. “It’s about creating an environment where people feel valued and heard,” she shares. “When you have a strong team around you, one that believes in collaboration and shared success, that’s where real innovation happens.”
For Catherine, fostering an inclusive space means championing mentorship and advocating for the next generation of female engineers. She emphasises the importance of visibility, believing that young women need to see strong female leaders to envision their own potential in STEM. “I always tell young women, don’t be afraid to take up space. Your ideas are valid, and your contributions matter.”
Anne Grealish: Engineering a Path to Leadership
Anne Grealish’s passion for engineering was sparked early, fueled by a fascination with how things work. As she advanced through her career, she embraced new challenges, transitioning from hands-on engineering to strategic leadership. Today, as Snr. Strategic Excellence Program Manager at Medtronic, she is responsible for guiding teams in delivering high-impact medical solutions.
Anne’s career journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. “STEM careers aren’t linear,” she notes. “You learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.” She recalls moments of uncertainty, where pushing past her comfort zone ultimately led to breakthroughs. “I remember a point in my career where I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a leadership role. But someone believed in me and encouraged me to take that step. That made all the difference.”
One of Anne’s key messages is the importance of confidence and self-belief. She encourages young women to say yes to opportunities, even when they feel out of reach. She also highlights the value of a strong support system, whether mentors, colleagues, or allies, who uplift and inspire along the way. “The best advice I ever got was to surround yourself with people who challenge you in the best way possible. That’s how you grow.”
