Listen to Episode 6:#GreatnessHasNoGender: West - Aine Brennan and Samantha Murphy
From Arts to Engineering: Samantha’s Journey
Samantha Murphy’s path to STEM was anything but straightforward. Despite her early love for math's and physics, she initially pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree, incorporating mathematics, before realising her true passion lay elsewhere. “I thought engineering was all about mechanics under the bonnet,” Samantha recalls, explaining her initial hesitation. However, a second encounter with engineering, now with a clearer understanding of its potential for problem-solving and innovation, led her to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Launching her career in MedTech, Samantha found profound purpose in creating life-saving devices. “You come home knowing you’ve made a difference,” she reflects. This sense of purpose drives her every day as a Business Unit Manager at West, where she leads initiatives focused on digitisation and human-centric manufacturing. Her role exemplifies adaptability in an industry that evolves rapidly, ensuring that West remains at the forefront of technological advancements.
Creativity Meets Problem-Solving: Aine’s Path
Aine Brennan’s journey into STEM was equally inspiring but took a different route. Initially passionate about literature and creativity, Aine never envisioned herself in a technical field. It wasn’t until a passionate math's teacher encouraged her to explore her potential that she discovered her love for engineering.
Realising that engineering could combine technical precision with creative design, Aine pursued a degree in Mechatronic Engineering. An internship at a medical device company solidified her passion for patient-driven innovation, leading her to join West in 2018 as an Automation Engineer. Her dedication and ingenuity propelled her to her current role as Value Stream Lead, demonstrating that perseverance and adaptability are vital in STEM careers. Speaking about her approach to tackling challenges, Aine shares: “I’ve frequently doubted myself, especially during times of change, but I remind myself of the last time I thought the same thing—and how I overcame it.”
Aine also credits mentorship for her growth: “Having a manager who takes the time to know you and identify what you’re good at can make all the difference. It’s about building relationships and leveraging your network.”
Overcoming Doubt and Imposter Syndrome
Both Aine and Samantha have faced their share of self-doubt, particularly when navigating new challenges. Samantha draws strength from her father’s wisdom: “The only people who don’t fail are the ones who aren’t trying.” This perspective has been instrumental in her ability to push through uncertainties and continue striving for excellence.
At West, a supportive global network provides a safety net for both women. Whether tackling new projects or making career shifts, Samantha and Aine rely on this network to bolster their confidence and skills. “When you see women who have progressed ahead of you, who have become parents and achieved incredible career milestones, it resets your thinking. You see that it’s possible.” Aine notes, underscoring the importance of a supportive environment in overcoming imposter syndrome. Their experiences are a testament to West’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace where talent is valued and supported.
