Limerick's Job Market Gets a Boost with Eli Lilly's $1bn Expansion
In a significant development for Limerick, Eli Lilly has confirmed a $1 billion investment into expanding its manufacturing facility in Raheen. This expansion will bring an additional 150 highly skilled jobs to the area, including roles for engineers, scientists, quality assurance professionals, and operations personnel, boosting the workforce to 450 employees once complete.
This move doubles the investment initially announced in March 2023, with the total now standing at $2 billion. The Limerick site is set to begin the production of biologic active ingredients by 2026, focusing on treatments for conditions such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, the facility is designed to operate with cutting-edge technology like machine learning and AI, optimising production processes while also reducing energy use, water consumption, and waste.
This project forms part of Eli Lilly's larger $20 billion global expansion strategy, which includes their $800 million site in Kinsale, County Cork. These expansions underscore Lilly’s commitment to addressing some of the world's most pressing health challenges while reinforcing Ireland’s role as a global biopharmaceutical hub (Limerick Post Newspaper) (The Chemical Engineer).
